All our products meet the required standards.

Contributing in the decoration of Matches Fashion’s new outlet on 5, Carlos Place, we have had a wonderful opportunity to further stretch the technical possibilities of hand producing terracotta.

Although the number of sqms needed to decorate the Victorian plant collection garden in the back of the historical building was only small, the creating of the right colour and finish were challenging. Some times meeting architectural standards can be complex and in this case it truly was.

The traditionally manually produced Lisciato Rosso, one of the oldest plain cotto’s and produced lots of times over the centuries, was experimented on several times before reaching the intensity in colour and smoothness in finish as was required by P. Joseph Architects.

The result: a beautiful, historical setting for Matches Fashion to entertain their clients and a valuable addition to our scala of terracotta creations!

Beauty Retail Design for Matches Fashion

New outlet store and Victorian plant collector’s garden of luxury retailer Matches Fashion in Mayfair, London. The 19th century heritage and Queen Anne-style building has led architects Philip and Peter Joseph to use terracotta, brick and Portland Stone in their re-design of the historic townhouse, resulting in a sophisticated and eventful shopping experience. All one by one manually produced and carefully packed for transport, our Padania and Tuscan fornaces’ floor and wall tiling have proven delightful components in a contemporary project housed in a historical setting.

Danilo Casagrande, Company Director of Fornace Bernasconi in Castel Viscardo, informed us on the production of the Quadrato Lisciato Rosso, to be deliverd for the Victorian plant collectors garden at 5, Carlos Place.

Danilo: First off, Fornace Bernasconi is not a factory but a craft workshop. It is essential to us to keep the traditions of our fathers, our history and our land alive, without losing sight of the style of healthy and modern living. We produce with close attention to detail and craftsmanship with the ultimate aim of satisfying customers with seriousness and professionalism.

Luigi, owner and Creative Director of Bernasconi, carries the passion to experiment with shapes and colours; the handling of the processes and finishes to meet the needs of the customers is my field of expertise.

In that respect, we experienced P Joseph's order as highly interesting. Although the Lisciato Rosso is one of the oldest plain cotto's and has therefore been produced lots of times over the centuries, we have put extra effort into delivering the tiles in the highest possible quality with regards to its impregnation and finish. Although exterior and interior floors need to be equally water repellent, we have given some extra thought to the fact that a retailer's location requires more of a floor than usual. The Lisciato finish has proven succesful for such locations.

The ultimate challenge in this project has been finding the right colour for the tile. Architects can be quite difficult sometimes; demanding almost when it comes to meeting the complexity of their designs! A number of impregnation tests were succesfully performed !

Interview with ELENA , FORNACE POLIRONE, June 10, 2018 on their contribution to the above project

Elena, management assistant of Fornace Polirone outlines the details of the production process of the Variegato tiles delivered for the Matches Fashion project.

Continuing the centuries-old activities of 'Fornace Morselli' in Mantua, Fornace Polirone over time specialized in the production of flooring according to ancient specimens. The Variegato as was used for the Matches Fashion retail outlet was performed according to the ancient traditions Polirone has respectfully followed over the centuries and has resulted in a beautiful and perfectly calibrated floor.

The challenge in the production of the Variegato, Elena says,  has always been the exact temperature when baking the tiles. As the tiles are stacked in the oven, the temperature at the top end of the oven is less  high than the temperature at the bottom. The right way of stacking and pre-heating the oven are crucial to create the perfect tile and to maintain the beautifully coloured lines that occur after the special kneeding treatment of the dough.
