HAND CRAFTED TERRACOTTA: MULTI-COLOURED FLOORS

Our producer in the area of the Po valley has been realizing handcrafted terracotta products such as bricks, floors, frames, balusters and vases piece by piece, following the traditional rules of dough mixing, moulding and cooking. The Po Valley alluvial lands are present in their quarries with thin overlapping deposits of clays of different quality and origin. In past centuries the dough was made in a coarse way, so that the shades of the various clays were manifested after cooking with the classic hazelnuts of different colours. Following the ancient methods of dough treatment, our producer maintains the characteristics of the historic Padania floors.

Intarsiato The inlaid bicoloured floors were found mainly in the Champagne and Bourgogne regions of France. The floors were used from the 12th to the 16th century in churches, monasteries, castles and, in general, in prestigious buildings.

There are many designs that allow you to get various compositions.

The tiles were usually assembled individuallyor in groups of 4 or 16 and had symbols and figures that in the Middle Ages evoked faith, life, nature and in later centuries floral and ornamental motifs.

Hundreds of drawings have been cataloged by various French museums. The normal dimensions were from 10 to 13 cm on each side with a thickness of about 2 cm.

The production method involves the creation of the deep trace with a mold of the design on the still plastic clay tile. Subsequently, the trace is filled with a "slip" of a contrasting color.

After drying, the piece is sanded to highlight the design and then baked in the oven.

Neogotico Lombardo In the first half of the nineteenth century an original floor was produced consisting of hexagons, diamonds and rhombuses proposed in "marbled" colors, black and white.

Nocciolato The "nutty" dough is the characteristic of the Padano area. The hazards or stains of color on the surface of the tiles are due to the presence of clays of different natures.

When the rivers were devoid of embankments, the floods brought in suspension clays of different origins (Apennine, Alpine areas ...) of different color and composition. These clays deposited and overlapped in layers gave rise to the current floodplains. For centuries the extraction of clays by small furnaces scattered on the territory was done by manual means.

Also the subsequent operation of dough was carried out by wetting the clay and with hoes it was tried to homogenize the dough which normally was rather coarse. During cooking the clays of different nature appeared with hazelnuts of different color and intensity.

Omogeneo The Omogeneo floors are produced manually following the ancient methods of forming in wooden molds. This type of dough is made from the same clay as the "nocciolato" but is made much more homogeneous through the use of kneading machines.

For this type of mixture we can only speak of manual forming. With this process the internal blowing and the nuts are reduced. With appropriate mixtures of clays we can obtain gradations of colors ranging from straw yellow to rosy to full red. The combination of different sizes and colors produces a wide range of compositions and frames, which allow you to draw designs as original as surprising.

Composizione Fiorentine

Derived from the name Medici, with these beautiful handmade Mediceo floors our producer of Impruneta cotto brings homage to the historic and richly decorated buildings created by Catherine de Medici, offspring from the famous Italian banking family and the Lords of Florence.

Patronized by her father in law King Francis, a prodigious patron of the arts who initiated the French Renaissance by attracting many Italian artists to work on the Château de Chambord and starting off the first School of Fontainebleau, in 1559 Catherine became a patron of architecture in her own right.

Over the next three decades, she launched a series of costly building projects aimed at enhancing the grandeur of the monarchy (Valois chapel at Saint-Denis, the Tuileries Palace, the Hôtel de la Reine in Paris, the château of Chenonceau).
